Following the Rules

Stress on the highway can quite often become overwhelming. One way to help with this kind of stress is to follow the rules. And if people don’t want to follow the rules, let them take a train! It always seems to be the other driver that’s not paying attention, but maybe if we give some special attention to what our following distance is, or whether or not we are using our turn signals, or even just giving a smile along the way, just maybe it will become contagious. Possibly the next driver will start to pay attention, and the next one, and after a while there could be more drivers following the rules and helping to make life less stressful. Try it and see if it works. Comment here.

Money Does Not Buy Happiness

According to the Sports Illustrated annual analysis of the highest earning U.S. athletes, Tiger Woods is still listed as number one. His endorsements for the year 2010 are twenty-two million less than last year, but are still estimated at ninety million dollars for one year. Can you believe that? That’s a lot of money, and I don’t mind admitting that I would like the opportunity to spend that amount. Yet, I can’t help but wonder if it’s all worth it. Woods has been through some very difficult times in the past year, and I would hope he would want to trade all of his money to do it over again and do it right. If we focus on our own desires and wants, we will end up in poverty, emotionally speaking. Money does not buy happiness. So what does? Try focusing on others and see what happens. Comment here.

Battling Stress

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most vexing, what stresses you out the most while on the road? Is it the time restraints that are imposed upon the driver, always worrying whether or not you are under the necessary weight limits, the ever changing D.O.T. rules that you must adhere to, or is it something personal, such as your lack of family time, sleep, or adequate finances? Whatever it may be that you stress about, take note that each one can be overcome. With a little practice, you can begin to recognize and take the necessary steps to properly handle those things, which can help you win the battle against stress on the road. Let us know if you need help. Comment here.

Only You?

Following the national basketball association news, the recent headlines highlighted the merger of three of the most well known basketball figures all landing positions with Miami, Florida. These three players claim to have their hearts set on one thing: championships (plural). They want to be the best of all time. I’m sure a large paycheck accompanies these positions, but they say it doesn’t matter, they just want to win. Some fans around the country have been hurt by these decisions because they feel betrayed and wonder what happened to team loyalty. Now I know you can’t please all of the people all of the time, but was there any consideration of others? I would love to see public figures focus on others instead of themselves. Where does your focus lie? Do you only think of yourself? Comment here.

Bridge Over Troubled Waters

There's no doubt that you’ve traveled over a bridge recently. A bridge provides passage over some sort of obstacle: a river, a valley, or a road. Bridges are everywhere and are a typical part of everyday life for most drivers. Maybe you’ve been turned away from crossing a bridge because your load was too heavy and you had to readjust to a new route. Sometimes we might find ourselves facing certain obstacles in life that can seem insurmountable and we need a “bridge” to get us over it. That’s when friends and family can be our bridges. As we lean on them for support, heed the wise advice they give, and use them as sounding boards, they can be invaluable to us as they help us journey through the difficult times in our lives. Something New

There is a lot of frustration and stress regarding the new CSA 2010 regulations. Both companies and drivers are anxious about whether or not they will be able to meet the criteria that has been laid out, or perhaps not laid out, within the new guidelines. Part of the pressure revolves around facing “something new”. Not many people like change, especially when it has the potential of altering their career, or dipping into their wallets. Without knowing all the ins and outs of the regulation, let me still encourage you not to stress out over it. Worrying about something never helps; it only makes things seem worse. If you have questions, ask someone, and if you don’t understand something, do some research. There are people ready to help. Comment here.

Face to Face Friends

The largest social network website is Facebook. The founder of Facebook states that they originally started the website so college-age students could find old friends from high school to see where they are and how they are doing. They claim that it now has grown so much it literally allows anyone to look up any person in the world they choose. The realization of this literally floors me. What happened to hanging out with friends and your best girl in your hotrods at the local ice cream spot? I may be a little naive, but this type of friendship concerns me. I think we need friends we can see face to face, so we can sharpen each other through good times and bad to become better people. Let me know what you think. Comment here.

Putting Others First

If you follow hockey, then you know that the NHL union has the option to file a grievance against the league after rejecting a contract deal between a certain player and team. It doesn’t really matter who the player and team are, but I did want to point out that the contract was worth one hundred and two million dollars for seventeen years of play. Can you even imagine one hundred and two million dollars? Is any player worth that kind of money? I’m not here to judge the contracts of professional sports players, but personally, I think that’s a little too much money. Not to mention why anybody would consider themselves worth that much. Whatever happened to putting others first, thinking of someone else’s needs before our own? I believe we would sleep better at night, and have more productive lives if we would put others before ourselves. What do you think? Comment here.

Stresses of the Digital Age

Many trucking companies have not hesitated to dive head first into the digital age to help with the communication and accountability of their day to day operations. This has been beneficial in the area of dispatching their drivers. At one time, we had to pull over and find a payphone during business hours to receive our next instructions. Today drivers can phone in from the comfort of their cabs or even use computers to obtain their instructions. Companies now have the capability of pinpointing the exact location of their vehicles and drivers. Of course, along with the good comes the bad. Many of the positive traits are also negative stressors. Phone ringing while you’re trying to sleep is just one. How do you handle the stress of the digital age in your life? Let us know. Photo Memories

Do you still maintain old-fashioned photo albums? Every once in a while I’ll pull one out of the early days of our kids or my military years and reminisce of days gone by with good memories, as well as some not so good. Quite often at Christmastime, my father-in-law likes to break out the old slide projector and slides. We sit and laugh for hours, just reminiscing with a little friendly jabbing at one another. I recently read that one of the social websites has over fifty billion (yes, billion) different photos posted on their website. That’s a lot of pictures to share, but it’s not quite the same as when you can sit and laugh, and do a little poking at close friends sitting next to you. How and with whom do you share your photos? These kinds of relationships are very important in our lives. Comment here.

Security and Stress

The recent upgrade and change in security at our airports makes many airline travelers very discontent. They claim it adds an additional amount of stress to their travel plans and doesn’t make it very fun for them to fly. The amount of security and stress doesn’t even come close to the amount of security and stress that truck drivers face trying to transport a load from point A to point B; not to mention if you have a load that enters, exits, or goes through another country. The requirements that drivers are forced to deal with for each and every load they sign for (or try to get someone else to sign for) would leave the normal air traveler shaking in their boots. When the stress gets to be too much for you to handle, give us a call. Comment here.

Looking Out For Number One

The end of the baseball season isn’t even here yet and current managers are talking about where they will be next year. I think the owners should see how they finish this year before they start to renegotiate their contracts for next year. Obviously, money will be at the center of these contracts and negotiations, and they will most likely be looking out for number one before anything else. That really isn’t how it should be. What would happen if we acted that way? What would happen if all our decisions were based upon our own goals and our desires? Maybe we should think of the needs of others first, before our own. Wouldn’t that be the right and noble thing to do? Tell us what you think. Comment here.

Etiquette on the Road

Etiquette is a word we don’t hear very often these days. Many drivers today get extremely frustrated and stressed out because of the lack of etiquette in the trucking industry. Things like drivers cutting you off, running in the wrong lane, not using turn signals, but using plenty of improper sign language and extensive lip service, are just the tip of the iceberg. You probably are aware of many more that have not been mentioned, and probably of some I don’t even know about it. Let me suggest that proper etiquette starts with you. The task of controlling your stress could start with you changing your attitude and demonstrating good manners out on the highway. Let us know how we can help. Comment here.

Social Connections

One of the social internet giants has stated that they see themselves at the beginning of a journey which gains them access to pictures of a world they never had seen before. I don’t disagree with that statement, nor do I believe that these social networks are evil. However, I do feel that maybe the days of visiting with family and friends to share our lives could be a thing of the past for many people. I fear that the social connection we once knew is gone. There are people who have more friends online than they do in their own town. Let me encourage you to build relationships with those around you. They will be there to help with the troubles and trials of your everyday life. Comment here.

Michigan Girl Dies

A ten-year-old girl in Michigan died after she went into convulsions that no one could explain, except for the fact that bruises on her head and side had been observed. Those investigating were hoping an autopsy would reveal much more. There is a sad history behind this young, defenseless girl’s home life. The Michigan Child Protection Services had removed her from her mom’s home a couple of years earlier after evidence of physical abuse, ranging from two sexual reports, to bleeding and black eyes, to numerous bruises, had been recorded. This kind of abuse should make your heart sink. There is absolutely no excuse for this or any type of abuse. But all too often, physical abuse goes unnoticed and unreported, and too many end up the same as this little child from Michigan. If you are aware of any kind of abuse, please let someone know. Someone’s life may depend on it. Comment here.

Money, Fame and Recognition

If you’re a baseball fan, you’ve probably heard that the Texas Rangers have been in a little financial trouble for quite some time now and were forced to file bankruptcy. They recently went up for auction and it all came down to two bidders: the current owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, and the Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan and associate. The winning bidder was Nolan Ryan in the amount of five hundred and ninety three million dollars! That’s a lot of money. Are they worth that much? Is any of it worth that much? (No wonder I have to pay so much to attend a ball game!) Where do you spend your hard earned dollars? Where is your focus when it comes to money? And should money, fame and recognition be the center of our attention? Let us know what you think. Comment here.

Human Trafficking

Here at Drivers Wellness, we have recently become aware of and have started a friendship with an organization that focuses on the tragedy of human trafficking. If you are unaware of this, human trafficking is when young underage girls are brought into the industry of sexual slavery against their will. They are brought in from other countries and kidnapped from within the United States, and forced to provide sex acts for money, which their traffickers keep. This kind of abuse is one of the most terrible cruelties, and the testimonies are sickening. If you are a trucker and see this type of activity in the truck stops you frequent, please give us a call. We will either put you in touch with the trafficking authorities, or we will contact them for you. Don’t let this type of abuse go on in our truck stops. Call us for more information. Comment here

What’s Your Favorite Book?

USA Today stated that the social network giant, Facebook, has grown to over five hundred million members. That’s a lot of people. When they first started and had a mere one million members, they conducted a survey and discovered that the two favorite books of members were the Harry Potter series and the Bible. Now that they have crossed the five hundred million members mark, they conducted the same survey and found that the same two books, Harry Potter and the Bible, are still the two favorites. What do you and your circle of friends find to be your favorite books? It could have a huge influence on what and where the conversation goes with your friends. Comment here.

Power Under Control

Maybe you are familiar with the ex-governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich. His story is somewhat intriguing as we can learn a thing or two regarding the abuse he used within his office. The first thing is in regards to the abuse of power. Whether your power is within your own your truck, the management of your office or at home with your family, we should not use that power for our own glorification. Leadership should be like a bridle on a horse: power under control. The second thing is about verbal abuse. At his recent court date, Mr. Blagojevich decided not to testify for himself. Why? Because his advisors realized that his tongue would hurt more than help. Our tongues have a way of getting us in trouble. If you struggle with abuse of power, whether physical or verbal, let us help. You’ll be a much better person for it. Comment here.
